We've had some version of the green smoothie every day this week now. Up until now, I had not let the kids see when I added the spinach and other veggies to our blender. This morning, Henry asked for "green smoothie." "And can you actually make it green today, Mom?"
As I worked, I told him about my Grandpa who used to make "green drink" from leaves in his vegetable garden. They were intrigued. Henry suggested that we add some leaves to our smoothie to make it green. "What a great idea! I have some leaves right here!"
Kimball immediately recognized the leaves as spinach, and I though our cause was lost, since Henry isn't a spinach lover. But they got excited as we added the following things to the blender:
- 1/2 large fuji apple
- 1/2 banana
- 1 cup grape juice
- 1/2 c. or so frozen mango
- 3 handfuls of spinach
- 1 handful of sugar snap peas
- 1 handful of baby carrots
Thanks again, Diane. I can't believe that my kids are eating new veggies--for breakfast!

A long time ago when we made smoothies alot I would put carrots in them. I think I even did spinach as well, but my kids were much younger and not as observant. We finally have a great blender again so I'm going to have to try the spinach on the sly and see if I can pull it off!
I meant to say "a lot". I know you are a grammatical guru so I thought I'd fix that for you!
You remind me of Ammon when he famously caught them with guile.
Spinach indeed!
mindy,
you don't need to go back and correct your grammatical errors on my account. i'd already done it in my head for you!:)
let me know how your kids enjoy the spinach smoothies!
i love it, "i just happen to have some right here!" how convinient that was!! haha!
i used to make a juice with carrots, celery, spinach, apple, and an orange which the girls loved! lala's been asking for quite sometime for me to make it again! i probably should since that girl will not eat any sort of vegetable!
i may have to try your smoothie, too!!
That is so funny.
We had the smoothies again today. They were a little brownish because I added more stawberries than I did the other day.I have been adding all sorts of vegetable baby foods to our smoothies for a while now (easy and nonperishable), now that I have tried the spinach I think I will have to try more fresh veggies.
Thanks for the inspiration!
You might want to try making it more of a treat by saying, "I only make green smoothies on M-W-F." Of course, they could earn one as a treat on the other days. Sometimes it helps to extend the novelty if you stop before they have had enough. (a trick I learned when playing games with cub scouts)
I make a "Green Smoothie" as well:
ice chips, apple juice, banana, strawberries, a huge handful of spinach & flax seed oil. -Delious and a true green. (Kids love it!)
That's awesome hearing about your kids and green smoothies! Before we know it, with the popularity of them, this nation is going to start being a healthier place.
Great job and kudos to you :)
You don't know how it makes my day to see a picture of your kids with their smoothies! That's just great. And how brilliant of you to let them come up with the idea for greens "on their own". I haven't tried carrots in mine, but I think I will. We used to juice them and they were so good!
(P.S. Thanks for the link too...)
