Reason #6: Evan is What Every Girl Wants

He loves walks on the beach

And just watching the waves crash on the sand.

He stands ready to protect your honor.

He looks cool, no matter what he's wearing.

He's helpful around the house.

He's good with motorized vehicles.

He'll never make you feel guilty about your sweet tooth!

Reason #5: Evan is Easy-Going

Evan is the 5th out of 6 kids, and with that came his easy-going personality. We always called him the peacemaker while we were growing up. It is pretty hard to ruffle his feathers. But that doesn't make him a pushover or a milktoast by any means. He is game for anything (including blind dates with girls who will blog about him later). He schedules a visit to see my little family a couple of times a year and never acts like he's sick of the kids, even when they want to climb all over him constantly. He's never the one to pitch a fit about which restaurant we should go to or what we should do on a day together; I honestly believe that he is happy doing whatever it is that we all want to do.
Several summers ago, when I was expecting our 3rd (Ian), Evan lived with us and worked in the area. I worried a bit about having a college student living with us, but it was all delightful. He would get home from work about the time I was making dinner and he would either wrestle with my two boys, play the guitar for me, or ask if he could help me make dinner or run to the store for anything. He even painted the new nursery before he left town. We missed him and have tried to convince him to come back again, but he's always got some other adventure planned.

Reason #4: Evan Loves Animals

Okay, in the interest of full disclosure, I'm not positive that Evan loves animals. But I do have this picture of him to prove it (if I wanted to manipulate Tamara, who loves animals). Evan at least isn't allergic to any animals that I know of, even llamas. See how they flock to him like a shepherd?

Reason #3: Evan Doesn't Take Himself Too Seriously

Evan's sense of humor is understated, subtle, and outrageous. You may think that those three adjectives don't go together, but they do with Evan. He is willing to grow bad facial hair and wear ridiculous sweaters for a laugh, all with a straight face. He and a friend made robot costumes for Halloween, mimicking Flight of the Conchords' music video, The Year 2000. He is not the loudest one in the room, but he is almost always the funniest if you pay attention to what's he's saying and doing.

Reason #2: Evan has Skills

He climbs mountains.

He kicks.

He potty trains toddlers. (Okay, he helps.)

He is a whiz in the kitchen. Seriously.

He rows.
He sails.

He swings.

He plays ping-pong like a rock star.

He surfs Southern Cal, Hawaii, Costa Rica, New York, Tonga, Peru, and Panama.

Is there anything this guy can't do?

Reason #1: Evan Loves Kids

Or is it that kids love Evan?

Here are some of Evan's biggest fans, telling why they will vote for him. If you're confused, go to this post and get yourself up to speed.

Check Back Soon

Relishing Motherhood is under construction while I transform it into Campaign Headquarters for Evan.

My adorable, charming, brilliant younger brother was date number 6 on the blog 31 Dates in 31 Days. Tamara, the girl who is conducting this great dating experiment, decided that she needed to get better at first dates and learn how to get to know guys better and let them know her better on a first date. So, she has gone out with a different guy (on a first date) every night for 30 days. She has been featured on Good Morning America, ABC News, the New York Post, and many other news outlets. Now, Tamara has announced that she will let the public help her choose which guy she will take on a second date on Valentine's Day. And I want that guy to be Evan!!

So don't run off just because things look different around here. Come back and read all the reasons that Tamara should pick Evan, and be sure to set aside some time on Friday afternoon or evening to vote. Tamara will announce the winner live on TV on Saturday morning.

To Bronwen, on her 2nd birthday (a few days late)

I had no idea that having a daughter would bring so much sunshine and joy into our family. I never anticipated how big of an impact you would have on the spirit of our home--how much you would soften your brothers, your father, and even me. I couldn't believe that having a baby girl would feel any different from having a baby boy, beyond the obvious fun of different clothes.

And yet, you ARE different from your brothers, even at your tender age. You are so clued in to everyone around you. You know what they like and what they don't. You love to be my little shadow more than anything else; a phrase you utter a thousand times a day is "I helpa, too, momma?" And I find it astonishing that when I am doing laundry, you identify each piece of clothing with the correct person, even when I have a hard time telling which clothes go to which brother without checking the tags. You have always quickly identified objects with the people who use them (remind me to tell you the story one day of Nana and the MnMs.)

One of our daily rituals is that you must sit in the sink and play in my makeup bag when I'm getting ready. It's the only way I can get you to sit still for your pig tails, but you insist on playing with brushes and rubbing chapstick on your face. You are completely wounded if I put on my makeup without your help; it is a betrayal of our bond.

You have radar that goes off as soon as I start cooking or baking. You might be busy playing with your favorite doll or watching Max and Ruby, but as soon as you realize that I'm in the kitchen you come running to "helpa too." It sometimes makes me crazy, especially because you try to taste everything, even raw meat, but I try to remember that I want you to work side by side with me later and I have to cultivate that now, while you are interested. You love cookie dough, cake batter, plain butter, and even taste the dry ingredients against my recommendations.

You, like your brothers, love books. Your favorites have always been the books that illustrate songs, including The Wheels on the Bus, I'm Trying to Be Like Jesus, Skip to My Lou, and We're Going on a Bear Hunt. You also love Max and Ruby books, books about babies, and books that involve kissing.

You love your babies, especially one that is completely ratty now, whom you call "Pink Baby." You got a new doll from Grammy and Papa that takes a bath with you. Not only did you reject all the rest of the gifts that night (except for the Annie CD you had already opened,) but now you want to bathe 3 times a day. You sit in the bath, singing to your baby and washing her and take great care to dry her with her towel when bath time is over.

You love to sing, and belt songs from Annie at the top of your lungs. I love that the new CD you have is the same recording as the record I listened to as a little girl. Whenever we sing as a family, you begin shouting out the names of the songs you want us to switch to: Jingle Bells, "Rock" (The Wise Man Built His House), "Popcorn" (Popping), Tomorrow, "Teech Ee All Dat I Dutch Do" (I am a Child of God) until we give in and sing your list. And if we sing one of your book songs, you shout, "Oh, no!" and run to find the book.

And somehow, as I noticed when you were only a few months old, having a daughter makes me feel more tied to the generations. You cause me to contemplate your future children and grandchildren and all those women who have come before us, passing on a legacy of love. As I watch you tenderly rock your babies or scold your brothers in an oh-too-familiar voice, you inspire me to be a better mother; a more gentle, soft-spoken, fun-loving mother for you to emulate. I know that you want to be just like me, and it makes me want to be a better example so that I don't pass my bad habits on to you. Thank you for inspiring me to be better for our whole family and for the generations that will come after you.

We love you more than words can express. You light up our days, fill our home with laughter and kisses, and bring peace to the storm. Your energy and determination can be exhausting, but even that we welcome.

I pray that you have a wonderful year and rejoice with the rest of us when we welcome your new little sibling in a few months (the one who wouldn't uncross its legs in the ultrasound.) We love you, little girl!

Love,

Your Momma

(And Happy 29th Birthday today to your Grammy. Here's a tribute that I wrote to her and Papa last year. We love you, Grammy!)

Of Love and Romance

Just a quick post to get you in the mood for Valentine's Day.

This month I have been loving the blog 31 Dates in 31 Days. I have been meaning to post about it so that you could follow Tamara's adventures with me, but haven't ever gotten around to it. And then yesterday Good Morning America beat me to the punch and featured her in the 8 o'clock hour.

Here's the deal with her blog: she just turned 31 and is single in NYC. She decided to take on a challenge to go out with 30 different guys, 30 days in a row, and then to take out one of them on a second date on Valentine's Day (the 31st date.) The dates are completely wholesome--in fact, one of the rules is that there is no alcohol consumed. You might just be able to guess her religious affiliation, even though she isn't broadcasting it. What's really fun is that she blogs about each date and you can see that she is looking for the good in each man--giving each one the chance to be her One and Only. She never tears down the guy or complains about it being the worst date she's ever been on--and I think, because of her attitude, she is going to have a hard time choosing one for a second date. She is finding that there are lots of great guys out there, lots of men whom she could click with. I have a favorite, myself. Read about her dates and leave me a comment if you think you can guess whom I like best.

In the meantime, I thought I'd share a yummy treat-for-two. If the state of the economy has made you turn to more date-night-at-home weekends (as it has us), try out this delicious dessert that is worthy of any restaurant. In fact, it's copied from a popular restaurant dessert. My SIL, Myrissa, gave us some personal-sized cast iron skillets for Christmas so that we could make our own Pizookies at home.

I made ours with a fabulous oatmeal chocolate chip recipe that I found here. The only change I made to the recipe is that I reversed the chocolates, using chopped bittersweet and milk chocolate chips. The cookies were heavenly, but were even better baked in our cast-iron skillet and served hot with vanilla ice cream. Jared & I split one and it was almost too much. Almost.

Birthday Interview with Henry

Today is Henry's birthday. We have spent the day doing fun activities, including planting in the garden, hanging bird feeders, going to the library, and going on a lunch date to Chili's--just the two of us. We celebrated with cousins and grandparents on Sunday, combining with Bronwen's and Grammy's birthdays. Henry requested an "all-you-can-eat-chocolate-Pollyanna-cake." So I made two 12 inch layers (each took one doctored up cake mix), iced it with thick chocolate buttercream, covered it in MnMs, and told him he could eat as much as he wanted. He couldn't finish one peice, but it has lasted several days, so he's satisfied!

I thought in honor of his birthday, I'd interview him. Here is the link to last year's birthday interview. I know that I still need to post about Bronwen's birthday, but I'm still not sure what I want to do for that one, so in the meantime, here's Henry's.
